Abstract:

We study the neutral excitation spectra of \nu=1/3 and \nu=1/2 quantum Hall states on infinite cylinders with circumferences in the range 7-10 magnetic lengths. At \nu=1/3, we find a magnetoroton mode that can be interpreted as a bound state of a quasi-particle and a quasi-hole. At \nu=1/2, the excitation spectrum contains linearly dispersing modes at small wavevectors and a fan of excitations at 2K_F, where K_F is the Fermi-wavevector of the composite-fermion (CF) Fermi surface. We present quantitative evidence for composite-fermions (CFs) by showing that the predictions of a quasi-1D CF theory agree with our numerics.
